BMF at the Universität zu Lübeck receives an award

The Biomedical Research Building (BMF) at the Universität zu Lübeck has been awarded the BDA Prize 2023 by the BDA State Association of Schleswig-Holstein as an outstanding architectural work!

On Tuesday, November 7, 2023, Prof. Markus Hammes and project manager Rainer Jöst, together with representatives of the client, received the plaque and certificate from jury member Prof. Amandus Samsøe Sattler. The high-caliber, international jury, chaired by Jette Hopp, honoured the building for its openness, clarity, and brightness.

We are delighted with this prestigious award and the appreciation that the social contribution of this research building makes a qualitative difference for society.

Openness, clarity and brightness radiate from the new research building at the Universität zu Lübeck. The new building, an extension of the already existing CBBM building, seamlessly integrates and thus links research disciplines with laboratories for approximately 450 scientists in terms of both content and space. When you enter the light-flooded, completely glazed atrium, you experience the laboratories as showcases of science. Thanks to the high transparency of the interior façades, all the activities becomes visible and tangible. Don’t we all wish that every university would not only allow insights into scientific work but also celebrate them?

A large staircase leads to the communication zones, enabling exchange and floor-spanning visual links between the different laboratories. The outward effect, designed as a continuation of the existing façade of the CBBM, is rather unspectacular and not particularly appealing. Only on the entrance side does the façade open up to a greater extent. However, one can also commend this type of adaptation for consolidating the connection between the disciplines. The building unfolds its quality inside, for the people who spend their days doing research there.

Assessment by the jury

The BDA Prize is awarded every four years with the aim of securing and promoting the quality of planning and construction with a sense of responsibility towards society and our environment and, in this spirit, honouring exemplary buildings in the state of Schleswig-Holstein.
