NewsBuilding of the Year 2020

Award for Light & Schools

The House of Teaching – Light & Schools at the University of Hamburg has been awarded the title of Building of the Year 2020 by the Hamburg Association of Architects and Engineers (Architekten- und Ingenieurverein Hamburg e.V. – AIV). During the award ceremony in Hamburg on 11 November, we were presented with the prestigious prize.

In her laudatory speech, architect Fiona Krauß, Vice Chair of the AIV, describes the integration of two pine trees as central figures of the outdoor space as a masterly achievement.

As if on a stage, the trees also give shape to the light and its energy as they live and grow, changing in space and time like everything living. At the same time, this dedicated structural gesture, implemented with great care and appreciation by all those involved in the construction, illustrates respect for nature.

Dipl.-Ing. Fiona Krauß

In addition to the award from AIV Hamburg, which acknowledges the excellent cooperation between clients, architects and engineers, the building has already received the best architects award 22 in the category of educational buildings and has been nominated for the DAM Prize for Architecture 2022 of the German Architecture Museum (DAM) in Frankfurt. The German Sustainable Building Council (DGNB) also awarded Light & Schools a silver certificate.

The building is a great place to build new bridges between university research and schools. I would like to thank our property management for the great effort, the faculty, the dean and the chancellor for their support and the whole team of hammeskrause architekten for this brilliant building!
