NewsNew Helmholtz Quantum Center+

1st Prize in the Competition for Forschungszentrum Jülich

Great joy! Congratulations to our team on winning 1st prize in the competition for the new building for the Helmholtz Quantum Center+ and this great achievement. Congratulations to Vega Pérez-Lozao and Jonathan Arkless and Astrid Karr!

The new Helmholtz Quantum Center+ at the site of Forschungszentrum Jülich is the constructional start and the attractive prelude of a deeply rooted research centre for the development of future-oriented quantum computing, scientifically fuelled by the Quantum Quarter that is newly defining itself as a part of Forschungszentrum Jülich. The new building reflects the desired division into its various institutes, which is reflected in the architecture. And yet, in the focal point of its three buildings, it creates an inner centre that is enlivened exclusively by the interdisciplinary, communicative interaction of all the scientists themselves.

Design concept

  • Creation of squares and landscape spaces for the new complex that can be clearly experienced through a wing-like differentiating building in the structurally and scenically still heterogeneous surroundings
  • Introduction of an identity-creating, internal and central urban square (Peter Grünberg-Platz) as an attractive gathering place for the new Quantum Quarter
  • Concentration of all “communication spaces” for the Helmholtz Quantum Center and the replacement building around a central atrium
  • Layout of the central pathways for the scientists from the wings to this atrium with its “science lounge”-style communication areas, meeting rooms, kitchenettes, seminar room, etc
