On Monday, November 13, as part of our monthly office talks, we went on a team outing to the University of Stuttgart-Hohenheim. There, our team was given a guided tour of the State Institute of Apiculture by project manager Tamara Wehner from the University Building Office. The new building by Lanz Schwager Architekten from Constance, which has won several awards, is to be certified in silver according to the Assessment System for Sustainable Building (BNB) as a pilot project for timber construction and sustainable building.
A very informative excursion! Heartfelt thanks to Tamara Wehner for insights into the project, and to Jürgen for the wonderful idea and organisation!
As an applied bee research institute with its own apiary at a university, the State Institute of Apiculture is unique in Germany. It explores fundamentals to solve current issues in beekeeping. Bee conservation also means insect conservation and is therefore essential for preserving biodiversity. The new building for the State Institute for Apiculture at the University of Hohenheim replaces the previous container structure from the 1960s, which could no longer be economically renovated to accommodate modern research operations.
