Project SheetSustainable Ensemble

Project Panel

Building in existing contexts — The LUBW in Karlsruhe is being extended with two new buildings; from 2025, more than 500 employees will be working at the Großoberfeld location. The architectural theme of the existing building is being formally expanded and systemically complemented to form a new ensemble. The new build fits closely into the existing building structure, thus creating synergies as regards circulation, supply and disposal and short routes for the employees. The coherent building structure ensures a uniform appearance of the LUBW towards the entrance to the city.

The external design makes the laboratory building an innovative technology carrier due to the photovoltaic façade that is integrated into the energy concept as an electricity generator. For the State Institute for the Environment, the façade represents an appropriate example of new thoughts about future-oriented building. The office building appears open towards the Großoberfeld, is not closed off to the city and its citizens, and extends the architectural theme of the existing building by keeping the familiar, light-flooded main entrance.

» The aim is to achieve silver certification in accordance with the BNB assessment system for sustainable building. The façade of the planned new laboratory building will have a photovoltaic area of 880 m² and an output of around 260 kilowatts peak (kWp). «

The LUBW extension is divided into a laboratory building and a comb-like office building. The two three-storey volumes are connected to each other and to the existing building via glazed walkways. This creates a coherent building structure, an ensemble of old and new with a uniform appearance towards the city entrance. In total, the state is investing around 67.4 million euros in the Großoberfeld location.

  • The existing building is retained as the address for LUBW, and the new building is located close to it. The architectural theme of the existing building is formally expanded and systemically supplemented to form a new ensemble.

  • The interior design is characterised by great clarity and good orientation. Places for informal communication and spontaneous encounters are consistently arranged at the interface between horizontal and vertical flows of movement and allow for visual relationships between the buildings.
