The best way for architects to grow with their own ideas is to be allowed to design their own spaces. When the administration building on the k32 site in Stuttgart a former radio factory by Rolf Gutbrod became vacant the opportunity was there: we were able to rethink our office as users.
The existing building offered a solid shell but it took a strong vision and targeted interventions to create a place that really suits us: sustainable, open, flooded with light. A space that enables communication and reflects our work culture. The aim was to create spaces that are not only functional but also make our way of working tangible.
Zones for informal exchange, an extended air space, daylight right down to the last corner and a two-storey room in the middle that makes working in a team a tangible experience. It wasn’t just about rearranging spaces. It was about creating an environment that connects us and inspires us every day.
from the existing building to your own space
With this idea in mind a team from our office including our founders Markus Hammes and Nils Krause as well as Joep Kuijs (now one of our partners) worked on the design for the conversion. Through targeted measures we were able to utilize the strengths of the existing building and at the same time create new open spaces that reflect our way of working. Four targeted interventions made the building ours:
- Continuous long skylight brings daylight deep into the heart of the building.
- Generous air space under the skylight connects the two floors allowing light to flow down to the first floor.
- Large grandstand not only creates a spatial connection between the levels but also a place for exchange and communal gatherings.
- New opening between the existing staircase and the largest meeting room opens up the building to the k32 campus and links our rooms with the surroundings.

Our office is since early 2018 more than just a place to work: it is a space that suits us. Because it works the way we need it to. Light, air and openness characterize the atmosphere. With this strong and inspiring environment we can look cheerful into the future. Ready to shape it together.
