NewsTopping-out ceremony in Regensburg

The new building for scientific work is taking shape

Last Friday, the topping-out ceremony was celebrated in Regensburg. An important milestone for the new building of the university’s scientific workshops. In the L-shaped building with around 4,400 m² of floor space, the electrotechnical and mechanical workshops of the Faculties of Biology, Physics and Preclinical Medicine will in future be united under one roof, as will central units of the technical building management and the central goods receiving department.

The new spatial proximity creates synergies. At the same time, functional working conditions are created that are tailored to the individual requirements of the workshops – with clearly structured heights, optimized work routes and shared technical facilities, such as overhead cranes or delivery zones.

Our design focuses on clarity, robustness and integration: two six-and-a-half meter high plinth buildings, separated by a delivery passageway, support a two-storey, approximately 103 meter long structure. With its reduced, monolithic façade, the building blends naturally into the architectural structure of the campus and forms a new address for working and learning with a focus on craftsmanship.

Precise workspaces are created inside: well thought-out in their sequence, flexible in use and permanently robust. Generous room heights in the workshop areas, functionally zoned upper floors with office, training and social areas: The new building is designed in such a way that it can also be adapted to changing requirements in the future.

At the same time, the building meets high sustainability requirements: In addition to being connected to the university’s local heating network, the building also features heat recovery in the ventilation and compressed air supply, green roof surfaces, biodiversity roofs and a 60 kWp photovoltaic system. In this way, the building reduces CO₂ emissions by up to 90 tons per year.

We are delighted that our design, developed in close collaboration with all those involved in the project, is now being built. And we would like to thank the Regensburg State Building Authority, the university’s user groups, the specialist planners and the entire project team for their trusting collaboration.
