Cyber Valley gets a home

An important milestone for European AI research: the ground-breaking ceremony for the new Cyber Valley research building was held in Stuttgart-Büsnau last week. A place that will create space for top international research in the field of artificial intelligence and robotics.

On behalf of the Max Planck Society, we at hammeskrause architekten are responsible for the project planning, overall BIM coordination and BIM management. The new building will provide Cyber Valley with a home. A place where ideas can emerge, meet and have an impact on the world.

Just as the future Nobel Prize winners must be intellectually flexible in order to conduct successful research, the building must also be flexible in order to remain fit for the future.” – Tobias Döring, managing partner of hammeskrause architekten

Our architectural concept focuses on the long-term usability and adaptability of the building. The research hall, the so-called HighBay, offers maximum technical openness for the most diverse forms of robotic experiments: driving, crawling, flying – perhaps even swimming. It is complemented by clearly structured laboratory and office areas as well as a vertically and horizontally networked communication area at the heart of the building. Tea kitchens, meeting zones, lounge areas and a central seating staircase are bundled here; a place for spontaneous encounters and exchanges.

In terms of design, the new building blends sensitively into the established structure of the campus and creates new connections between the existing buildings: the MF2000, Building S and the precision laboratory. The result is a sustainable, open research landscape that can provide an environment for findings of global relevance today and in the future.

We would like to thank everyone who has lent their voice to this project:

  • Petra Olschowski, Minister of Science, Research and the Arts Baden-Württemberg
  • Prof. Dr. Patrick Cramer, President of the Max Planck Society
  • Prof. Dr. Christoph Keplinger, Managing Director at the MPI for Intelligent Systems
  • Prof. Dr. Peter Middendorf, Rector of the University of Stuttgart
  • Isabel Fezer, Mayor for Youth and Education of the City of Stuttgart
  • Dipl.-Ing. Tobias Döring, Managing Partner of hammeskrause architekten

Special thanks also go to our dedicated project team: Astrid Karr, Max Junker, Saskia Lekis, Woo-Jin Sim, Steffen Maurer, Hannah Eichel, Michael Käfer, and many more – thank you for your expertise, your passion and your tireless efforts!

We would like to thank the state of Baden-Württemberg for the funding, the Max Planck Society for their trust, especially Mr. Michael Streng, as well as all the planning and construction partners who are working with us to realize this groundbreaking building.

We look forward to the realization and to a building that offers researchers from all over the world an inspiring environment for new ideas.
