This roofscape is more than just an architectural feature; it strengthens connections and creates spaces for movement. Three central aspects make it an integrative element of the research environment on campus:
- A roof that shortens and connects paths: The terraced roofscape is freely accessible to all employees on the research campus. It provides a shortcut on foot between the surrounding buildings – an architectural element that brings the campus noticeably closer together.
- A place to stay with added value: Over 2,500 square meters of parkland invite you to linger. The meandering paths lead through a varied, green landscape and create places for relaxation, reflection and encounters.
- Sustainability is an essential component: The extensive green roof with trees, sedum, meadow flowers and herbs strengthens biodiversity and creates a habitat for insects. A cistern collects rainwater, which is used to irrigate the plants and as gray water for the building.
The fifth facade of the MPSD is therefore not only a functional component of the institute, but also a conscious architectural decision for more quality of stay, sustainable design and, in particular, serves to network the entire Hamburg-Bahrenfeld research campus.
The Flachdach Contest focuses on buildings that impress with their innovative use and design quality. This project shows how architecture can have an impact beyond the building itself.
