An important milestone for our project in Kiel: Last week, we celebrated the topping-out ceremony for the new Center for Fundamental Research in Translational Evolutionary Biology (CeTEB) together with representatives from science, politics and administration. The research center is being built under the management of Gebäudemanagement Schleswig-Holstein AöR (GMSH) on the campus of Kiel University (CAU) and comprises 4,850 square meters of state-of-the-art research space.
The ceremony was attended by Finance Minister Silke Schneider, Science Minister Karin Prien, GMSH Managing Director Susanne Kirchmann, CAU Chancellor Claudia Ricarda Meyer and Kiel’s Lord Mayor Dr. Ulf Kämpfer, among others. CeTEB marks the start of a far-reaching campus expansion. In future, it will offer researchers from various CAU institutes and external institutions a joint working platform to exchange and further develop innovative concepts in evolutionary biology research.

The four-storey research building combines state-of-the-art laboratories with open communication areas. Two laboratory clusters per floor, supplemented by function rooms, offices and a central documentation zone, create a highly flexible working environment. The light-flooded atrium, which not only serves as a connecting element, but also promotes interdisciplinary exchange, is particularly striking. Generous glazing and a glass roof ensure the sustainable use of daylight. The sustainable construction method is also underlined by a green façade (designed by Landschaftsarchitektur+), photovoltaic systems and the planned BNB certification.
Special thanks to our team which is working on this project with great commitment: Joachim Klüsekamp (architect, project manager), Saskia L. (architect), Sergio Manzanares (architect), Deborah Schäfer (architect), Alana Lichtenborg (architect), Hannah Eichel (architect), Prof. Markus Hammes (architect and founder of hammeskrause architekten) and Joep Kuijs (architect, partner of hammeskrause architekten).
Following this successful celebration we are now working focused towards completion. We are looking forward to the next steps and to soon reaching another milestone in this pioneering project.
