With his many years of experience in the design of laboratory and research buildings, he has engaged intensively with resource-efficient construction methods.

His answers in the interview reveal an analytical and thoughtful approach. He does not view sustainability in isolation, but rather in connection with the use, cost-effectiveness, and technical implementation of buildings. He is not a dogmatic advocate of specific materials, but rather weighs the pros and cons of various construction methods. Of particular importance to him is the early integration of sustainable concepts into the planning process, the participation of users and building owners, and the simplification of complex processes. His perspective combines in-depth expertise with pragmatic solutions—a combination that distinguishes him as an expert in this field.

What exactly does “circular construction” mean to you?

Circular construction is part of the broader issue of sustainability, but it takes a crucial step further. Every building has an impact on the environment—from land sealing and the use of building materials to energy consumption. The key question is: What happens to the building when it is no longer in use? Can we design it in such a way that it can take on a different function? A building should not be designed with a fixed lifespan, but should remain flexible for long-term use. Choosing the right materials is essential when it comes to sustainable construction. In our daily practice, we notice that tried-and-true solutions are often preferred here. But what happens if we dare to explore alternative paths?

What role does the choice of materials play in resource-efficient construction?

It plays an immense role. The challenge lies in weighing the different materials and their properties against one another. Steel, for example, is a smart building material because it can be 100% recycled. Wood sequesters CO2, but its processing generates fewer emissions than concrete or steel. Nevertheless, one must carefully consider how wood can be reused in the event of demolition. Every material has its pros and cons. The key lies in appropriate application and early, holistic planning.

How can digital tools help us plan more sustainably?

Digital tools make it possible to compare different building materials in simulations as early as the planning phase. For example, we can model how CO2 emissions change when a building is constructed using wood instead of reinforced concrete. We see great potential here for the future. However, we need more efficient tools that enable these comparisons even faster and in a more automated way. In addition to materials, usage is also crucial. A building can only be truly sustainable if it can be used long-term and adapted as needed.

Can you give an example of where this approach has been successfully implemented?

A good example is the design of our laboratory buildings. Here, we deliberately developed flexible spatial concepts in which utility shafts were strategically positioned to facilitate future adaptations. From the very beginning, we factored in that requirements would change. As a result, the building remains usable for decades without the need for major renovations. A common argument against sustainable construction is the supposedly higher costs. However, when sustainability is integrated into the concept early on, it often opens up entirely new economic opportunities.

How can resource-efficient construction be made economically viable?

It starts with clearly defining objectives: When sustainability is viewed as a fundamental component of the building concept, costs can be specifically reduced and resources allocated more effectively. One example from our practice is the LSQC building: From the outset, it was clear that a timber-frame structure would be more costly. Through smart planning decisions, such as foregoing a basement and placing the mechanical and electrical spaces directly on the ground floor, we were able to save funds and invest in higher-quality, sustainable materials. We are convinced that the architecture industry will undergo a major transformation in the coming years. Digitalization offers enormous opportunities to make sustainability more efficient.

How important is digitalization in terms of planning and implementation?

It has become indispensable; digital technologies allow us to quickly run through different design options and analyze their impact on sustainability, costs, and functionality. The use of AI will also help develop smart solutions more quickly in the future.

What needs to change in the industry to make the circular economy the standard?

It’s not just about individual building materials or technical solutions, but about a fundamental shift in thinking. Architecture should be viewed holistically—aesthetically, functionally, and in a way that conserves resources. Often, the simplest solutions are the best. We must ask ourselves:

What can we leave out? How can architecture achieve more with less?

Conclusion: Architecture with Responsibility

Circular construction is not a fixed concept, but a dynamic process that is constantly evolving. As an architectural firm, we see it as our mission to actively help shape this transformation. It is not just about using sustainable materials, but about creating architecture that is flexible, economical, and future-proof in the long term. After all, the most sustainable buildings are those that are still in use decades later—and do not need to be demolished.

Special thanks to Jürgen Naverschnigg for this, in his own words, entertaining interview.

Sustainability and circular construction are central themes in modern architecture.
