Leibniz Institute of Polymer Research, Dresden

Project Panel

The Leibniz Institute of Polymer Research Dresden (IPF) is one of the largest institutions for polymer research in Germany. The new five-storey building expands the site of the IPF in Dresden‘s old town core, establishing visual connections to the existing buildings. The institute comprises, apart from office spaces, a library, an archive and mechanical workshops. The guest apartments on the upper levels have access to a roof terrace and a canteen is planned for the ground level.

The institute is clad in an aluminium post and beam façade spanning from the ground floor to the second floor. The two levels above, comprising of twelve guest apartments, obtained a curtain wall façade with visual protection through adjustable integrated slats, which can be controlled separately. The interior rooms are characterized by exposed concrete. The walls accompanying the staircase display embedded stencils spanning across three storeys, the themes of which are related to the institute.
